Our Technology

Digital X-Rays

Why dental X-Rays are Important:

X-Rays are an essential part of modern dentistry, as they provide us with the ability to identify problems that may not be apparent through a visual examination alone.

X-Rays allow Dr. Kinn to more effectively…

• View the status of developing teeth
• Get a good look at tooth roots
• Locate cavities
• Monitor the condition of the bone around the tooth
• Check for periodontal disease

We use digital X-Rays:

Our practice uses digital dental radiographs, or digital X-rays, which are a modern improvement over traditional X-rays.

This type of X-ray uses digital sensors instead of the photographic X-ray film used in the past, allowing for enhanced computer images of oral structures such as your teeth, gums, jawbone, and more.

These types of X-rays allow us a better picture of what is happening inside of your mouth, making it easier to spot problems and provide a proper diagnosis for any conditions you may have.

Some of the advantages offered by digital X-rays include:

  • Digital X-rays use between 50% to 80% less radiation than traditional X-rays.
  • They’re able to better reveal small hidden areas of decay that might exist below fillings, under other restorations or between teeth.
  • They can help us identify bone infections, abscesses, tumors, or gum disease, which might have otherwise gone unnoticed in a visual examination.
  • Digital X-rays can easily be viewed on a computer monitor, enhanced with software tools, and quickly sent electronically to a specialist if needed. This also makes it faster to send to insurance companies for faster insurance claims.
  • The digital format allows for easy storage; there’s no physical X-ray that needs to be filed and stored.
  • Digital X-rays are more environmentally friendly.

As with everything we do at our practice, we’ve chosen to use this technology because it allows us to provide you with the highest-quality dental treatment possible.

3D X-Rays

3D X-Rays – The Advantages of CBCT Technology in Dental Care:

Our office uses the latest dental technologies to provide our patients with the highest quality of care. One of the tools we utilize is CBCT technology, which allows us to provide more precise and comprehensive imaging for a range of dental procedures. In this article, we’ll explore what CBCT technology is, how it works, and the advantages it provides for our patients.

What is CBCT Technology?

CBCT technology, also known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography, is a type of 3D X-ray imaging that provides detailed and accurate images of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. Unlike traditional 2D X-rays, which provide a flat image of the mouth, CBCT technology creates a 3D image, allowing for a more comprehensive and detailed view of the area being scanned.

How Does CBCT Technology Work?

During a CBCT scan, the patient sits in a chair while the scanner rotates around their head, capturing multiple images from different angles. The images are then combined to create a 3D image of the area being scanned. The process is quick and non-invasive, and the patient is exposed to minimal radiation.

Advantages of CBCT Technology for Patients

CBCT technology provides several advantages for patients, including:

  1.  More Accurate Diagnosis – CBCT imaging provides more detailed and accurate images than traditional X-rays, allowing for more precise diagnosis of dental conditions and abnormalities.

  2. Better Treatment Planning – With 3D imaging, the dentist can more accurately plan dental procedures such as dental implants, root canal therapy, and orthodontic treatment. This results in better treatment outcomes and a more efficient process overall.
  3. Improved Patient Safety – CBCT scans use lower radiation doses than traditional CT scans, reducing the risk of radiation exposure for patients.
  4. Enhanced Patient Understanding – With 3D images, patients can better understand their dental condition and treatment options. This can help them make more informed decisions about their dental care.

Uses of CBCT Technology in Dentistry

CBCT technology is used in a variety of dental procedures, including:

  1. Implant Planning – CBCT scans allow the dentist to assess the jawbone, identify potential issues, and plan the placement of dental implants with greater precision.
  2. Root Canal Therapy – CBCT imaging helps the dentist identify the root canal anatomy, allowing for more successful root canal therapy.
  3. Orthodontics – CBCT scans provide detailed images of the teeth and jaws, allowing our dentists to evaluate and plan orthodontic treatment more accurately.

At our practice, we are committed to using the latest technology to provide our patients with the best possible care. If you have any questions about CBCT technology or any of our other services, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Digital Impressions

Impressions of teeth have been an important step in the orthodontic process, but, in the past, they’ve required the patient to hold trays full of gooey impression material in their mouths. Our office uses an intraoral scanner to create digital impressions quickly, with less inconvenience for our patients.

Modern digital impressions are easier and more accurate than traditional impressions.

Q. How were impressions traditionally made?

A. The old method of making dental impressions required the patient to hold trays in their mouth using an impression material such as alginate or polyvinylsiloxane. They would need to wait for this to solidify enough to retain its shape once removed.

The resulting molds were often sent away to a third party to create a cast of the patient’s teeth, after which it would be sent back to the dentist’s office.

If there were any problems with the mold or resulting cast, the patient might need to come back again to have another impression taken.

Q. How do digital impressions work?

A. Digital impressions greatly simplify the process by reducing the need for making molds and casts. The scanner uses a small wand that captures thousands of images a second, feeding them to a computer that uses the images to assemble a 3-dimensional visualization of the patient’s teeth.

The scanning wand is small, allowing it to be easily moved around teeth—even the backs of molars—without requiring the patient to open their mouths wider than is comfortable.

The 3D image is assembled rapidly, making it possible to spot any missing parts of the impression as the scan is being done, eliminating the need for the patient to come in for a repeat visit.

Q. What are the benefits of digital impressions?

A. The 3D imaging created by the digital scanner has more detail than could be attained through 2D imaging, making for better planning of orthodontic treatment. The 3D scans can also be used for patient education, showing them how their teeth currently fit together and which areas are causing problems.
