There are many dental allergies that a patient may experience when going to their dental appointment. These allergies aren’t to the doctors themselves, but rather the materials they use, such as latex. If you experience any of the following allergies, inform your dentist before your next appointment.
Latex Allergy
Latex allergies occur due to certain proteins found in the latex material. When someone who is allergic comes into contact with this material, the body springs into fight mode. The immune system sends antibodies to fight off the material. Chemicals such as histamine are sent into the circulatory system throughout the body. This causes an allergic reaction to occur.
Warning signs of a latex allergy include:
- Tingling, red skin and/or eyes
- Hives or rash
- Raspy throat
- Sneezing
These are minor warning signs of a latex allergy occurring. When a patient experiences more severe symptoms, it is referred to as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis occurs rapidly and may be fatal. Seek emergency medical care if you experience the following problems:
- Unsteadiness
- Queasiness and sickness
- Confusion
- Loss of consciousness
- Weak or rapid pulse
