What is a Sincere Smile?

No matter what language we speak, a smile is a universal sign of happiness and trustworthiness in terms of non-verbal communication.

A study carried out in 2005 claims that you might almost say that receiving an authentic, heartfelt smile from somebody is better than getting money. “The powerful emotions triggered when someone important in our lives smiles at us and we smile back changes our brain chemistry. It creates what is termed a ‘halo’ effect that helps us remember other happy events more vividly, feel more optimistic, more positive, and more motivated,” according to psychologist Dr. David Lewis, who examined these findings.

Furthermore, endorphins and a stress-managing hormone called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor are releasing during smiling, giving smiles the ability to decrease stress. An honest smile also attributes to sincerity, friendliness, and confidence. This is the reason why companies are most likely to work with those who show bright, honest smiles throughout the interview process than potential employees who had insincere smiles.

How does someone know if a smile is honest or not? The majority of people can notice the difference when we’re interacting with others. When people force a smile, it usually does not reach the person’s eyes and there is usually a lot of tension in the muscles around the mouth. A Duchenne smile is a term used for genuine types of smiles. This type of smile is when our cheeks are pushed up by the lifting of the mouth’s corners, causing crow’s feet to form at the corners of our eyes.

This is fascinating, don’t you think? Something as simple as a smile can create a positive impact on a person’s life. However, for some people, smiles don’t come easily. Some people may be guarded when it comes to showing their smiles, such as those who suffer from dental complications, like missing teeth, tooth decay, or similar issues. Because of this, these people are at risk of being mislabeled as unapproachable, mean, and incompetent regardless of how they really are.

Dr. Kinn believe that it’s important that all of their patients feel confident in their smiles. If you haven’t visited us lately, go ahead and schedule an appointment today!
