Health and Wellness | Unhealthy Food and Poor Dental Health

We have stated this before but is important to remember that your oral health is connected to your overall health and well-being. We want to assist our patients any way we can with their dental health and their general health and wellness.

Although sweets may be a treat occasionally, these kinds of foods can result in severe dental health problems which consequently have the chance of impacting the rest of your body and overall health.

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, can damage not only your tooth’s bone structure, it can easily cause a systemic inflammatory reaction. This can intensify the threat of heart disease and other inflammatory conditions. Large volumes of sugar can cause cavities as well as heighten your risk for gum disease.

Sugar is especially prevalent in things such as candy, soda, flavored water, energy drinks and sports drinks. This means they are high in calories and low on nutritional value. Besides a low nutritional value, sugar can increase the chances of tooth decay and cavities. Learn more about how sugar can damage your tooth enamel.

You should also be mindful of “diet” beverages which still contain high acidic levels which can contribute to the failure of tooth enamel. Reducing the consumption of these items can dramatically boost your dental and overall health.
