Do You Want To Stop Smoking?

Smoking and other forms of tobacco are bad for your overall and oral health.

Cigarette and tobacco use will cause your teeth to discolor due to nicotine and tar, tartar and plaque to build up on your teeth, and increase your chance of contracting mouth or throat cancer. Chances are you have been smoking since before you were 18, so these problems may have developed quite a bit for you – the sooner you can stop smoking, the better.

  1. One of the biggest reasons people smoke is to relieve stress. Managing your anxiety and keeping yourself relaxed can be one of your best tools in your battle to quit smoking. There are many activities health professionals have identified that will relieve your stress. These include: receiving a massage, listening to certain genres of music, and doing yoga.
  2. If consuming alcohol makes you want to smoke, Dr. Kinn suggest abstaining from alcoholic beverages. If you want to have an alcoholic beverage you should consider discarding your cigarettes and other tobacco products prior to consumption.
  3. Oftentimes, people want to smoke after a meal. If this is the case for you, Dr. Kinn recommends replacing this urge with chewing gum or something sweet that will take off the edge.

Identifying what causes you to smoke is one of the most important aspects of actually quitting.
