What Are Common Dental Allergies? Part 2

Our previous blog discussed latex allergies that patients may experience when visiting the dentist. This post covers a couple of other potential dental allergies.

Is a Latex Allergy Contact Dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis is a reaction that occurs when our skin comes into contact with a certain ingredient in fragrances, soaps, or beauty products. The side effects of this reaction include dry, itchy, and burning skin.

Contact dermatitis can be categorized in two different ways:

  • Skin allergies caused by poison ivy, jewelry, metals such as nickel, cosmetics, or latex gloves are referred to as allergic contact dermatitis.
  • A reaction to materials irritating our skin over some time is referred to as irritant contact dermatitis.

Some patients experience an allergic reaction to elements in dental porcelain and bonding, amalgam fillings, toothpaste, and fluoride therapies. The areas that are normally affected are the gums, lips, tongue, and skin.

Local Anesthetic

Tooth removal or a filling is tolerable for most patients through the use of local anesthetics. Some patients experience an allergic reaction when given a local anesthetic, however. Here are some warnings to be aware of that could indicate an allergic reaction is occurring.

Swelling of the mouth may occur after the local anesthetic has been given. In extreme cases, patients may experience trouble breathing.

Additional side effects might consist of feeling anxious, hyperventilation, raised heart rate, as well as contact dermatitis.

An allergy to local anesthetics may be caused by an allergy to epinephrine and chemicals such as methylparaben used in the substance. Patients who think they’re allergic to novocaine or other local anesthetics can undergo a skin allergy test to determine if this is the case.

It’s essential to remember to share any exceptional points of your medical history with your dentist. This information could be vital in deciding if local anesthetics are the correct approach for you.

We ensure that our patients feel safe during their appointment. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Dr. Kinn or our team about any concerns you may have. Book an appointment today!
